The question, in short
Use a pie chart of favourite swimming strokes, with 12 members choosing backstroke, to find the front crawl count; then use a 90-member diving club table with frequencies 18, x and 2x to find a probability.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.
Part (a) · 2 marks
Using the pie chart angles and the 12 members who chose backstroke, work out how many members chose front crawl.
- 1The backstroke sector is 72° and it represents 12 members
- 272 ÷ 12 = 6, so each member is represented by 6°
- 3The front crawl sector is 138°
- 4138 ÷ 6 = 23
- 523 members said front crawl
Answer23
Part (b) · 3 marks
For 90 diving club members with group frequencies 18, x and 2x, find the probability a randomly chosen member is intermediate.
- 1Intermediate and advanced together: 90 − 18 = 72.
- 2x + 2x = 72, so 3x = 72 and x = 24.
- 3There are 24 intermediate members out of 90.
- 4Probability = 24/90
Answer24/90
