The question, in short
Substitute m = −5 and c = 3 into P = m² − 4c to find P, then expand and simplify (x + 5)(x − 7).
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Part (a) · 2 marks
Work out P using P = m² − 4c with m = −5 and c = 3.
- 1(−5)² = 25
- 24 × 3 = 12
- 325 − 12 = 13
Answer13
Part (b) · 2 marks
Expand and simplify the product (x + 5)(x − 7).
- 1x × x = x²
- 2x × (−7) = −7x
- 35 × x = 5x
- 45 × (−7) = −35
- 5−7x + 5x = −2x
- 6x² − 2x − 35
Answerx² − 2x − 35
