The question, in short

Points A, B, C, D lie on a circle with straight lines ABP and DCP; given AB = 16 cm, BP = 14 cm, CP = 12 cm, find the length of DC.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Solution · 3 marks

  1. 1Intersecting chords outside the circle: PA × PB = PD × PC.
  2. 2PA = 16 + 14 = 30, so 30 × 14 = 420.
  3. 3PD × 12 = 420, so PD = 35.
  4. 4DC = PD − PC = 35 − 12 = 23
