The question, in short

Using the right-angled triangles ADE and CDB with AE = 28 cm, ED = 45 cm, AB = 21 cm and CD = 35 cm, work out the area of triangle CDB to 3 significant figures.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Solution · 5 marks

  1. 1AD² = 28² + 45² = 784 + 2025 = 2809
  2. 2AD = √2809 = 53 cm
  3. 3BD = 53 − 21 = 32 cm
  4. 4BC² = 35² − 32² = 1225 − 1024 = 201, so BC = √201 = 14.17... cm
  5. 5Area = 1/2 × 32 × 14.17... = 16√201 = 226.8... ≈ 227 cm²
