The question, in short
Use a centimetre grid map of an island with points A and B to read coordinates, measure bearing and length, convert to real distance, and find a journey time.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.
Part (a) · 1 mark
State the grid coordinates of point A.
- 1Read the coordinates of point A from the grid.
- 2The horizontal (x) coordinate is 1, the vertical (y) coordinate is 4.
- 3(1, 4)
Answer(1, 4)
Part (b) · 2 marks
Measure and give the bearing of A as seen from B.
- 1Draw a north line at B
- 2Measure clockwise from north round to the line BA
- 3Bearing of A from B = 248° (246° to 250° accepted)
Answer248 (accept 246 to 250)
Part (c) · 1 mark
Measure the straight line AB and give its length in centimetres to one decimal place.
- 1Place the ruler's zero on A and read the length at B
- 2AB = 5.4 cm
Answer5.4 (accept 5.2 to 5.6)
Part (d) · 1 mark
Using 1 cm represents 5 km, calculate the real distance Aaron cycled from A to B.
- 1AB measures 5.4 cm on the map
- 21 cm represents 5 km, so 5.4 × 5 = 27 km
Answer27
Part (e) · 2 marks
Find how long the ride took from 10 45 am to 1 05 pm, in hours and minutes.
- 110 45 am to 12 45 pm is 2 hours
- 212 45 pm to 1 05 pm is 20 minutes
- 3Total: 2 hours 20 minutes
Answer2 hours 20 minutes or 2:20
