The question, in short

Solve the double inequality −7 ≤ 2x − 3 < 5 and show the resulting solution set on a number line spanning −6 to 6.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Part (i) · 3 marks

Find the values of x satisfying −7 ≤ 2x − 3 < 5.

  1. 1Add 3 to all three parts: −4 ≤ 2x < 8
  2. 2Divide all three parts by 2: −2 ≤ x < 4

Answer−2 ≤ x < 4

Part (ii) · 2 marks

Draw the solution set from part i on the given number line from −6 to 6.

  1. 1−2 is included (≤), so draw a filled circle at −2
  2. 24 is not included (<), so draw an open circle at 4
  3. 3Join the two circles with a line

AnswerA closed circle at −2 and an open circle at 4, joined by a line between them
