1. Which Rule? Look at What You Have

A triangle with no right angle needs one of three tools. Look at what the question gives you and what it asks for.

You haveUse
A side and the angle facing it, plus one more factthe sine rule
Two sides and the angle between themthe cosine rule
All three sides, and you want an anglethe cosine rule
Two sides and the angle between, want the areathe area formula

Rule

Look for a matching pair: a side and the angle facing it. A pair means the sine rule. No pair means the cosine rule.

2. Two Triangles: Cosine Rule, Then Sine Rule

The most common 5-mark question: two triangles share a side. Find the shared side in the first triangle, then use it in the second.

Triangle has cm, cm and . Triangle has and . Find .

Worked example

  1. 1

    — In triangle we know two sides (7 and 9) and the angle between them, and want the side opposite that angle. There is no side-and-facing-angle pair, so use the cosine rule.

  2. 2

    — Square the sides: 49 + 81 = 130. Multiply 2 × 7 × 9 = 126.

  3. 3

    — Work out first, then subtract from 130.

  4. 4

    — Square root to get . Keep 4 figures: it is the shared side, used again next.

  5. 5

    — Now triangle has a pair: faces the 58° angle. faces the 40° angle, so use the sine rule.

  6. 6

    — Multiply both sides by to get on its own.

  7. 7

    — Work it out and round to 3 significant figures, only now at the end.

Common mistake

Rounding to 8.8 first. That gives 6.67, which loses the accuracy mark. Round only at the end.

3. Area Given: Work Back to the Angle

The other common 5-mark question gives the area. Put it into the area formula to find the angle, then use the cosine rule.

cm, cm, the area is 30 cm² and angle is acute. Find .

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Area = ½ab sin C, with sides 8 and 11 around angle . The area is given and is unknown.

  2. 2

    — Half of 8 × 11 is 44.

  3. 3

    — Divide both sides by 44.

  4. 4

    — Inverse sine. The question says is acute, so this is the angle we want.

  5. 5

    — Now two sides and the angle between them are known, so use the cosine rule for the third side.

  6. 6

    — Square the sides: 64 + 121 = 185. Multiply 2 × 8 × 11 = 176.

  7. 7

    — Work out , then subtract from 185. Use the full calculator value of , not a rounded one.

  8. 8

    — Square root, to 3 significant figures.

Key idea

If the question says the angle is obtuse, use 180° minus it: here that would be 137.0°.

Common mistake

Stopping at the angle. The question wants a side, so the area is only the first step.

4. One Triangle, One Rule

Some 5-mark questions are a single triangle: find angle . Look for a pair first.

A triangle has a 110° angle facing a side of 9.5 cm. Angle faces a side of 6.2 cm.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The side 9.5 faces the 110° angle, so there is a pair: use the sine rule. faces 6.2, with the unknown angle on top.

  2. 2

    — Multiply both sides by 6.2.

  3. 3

    — Work it out: 6.2 × 0.9397 ÷ 9.5.

  4. 4

    — Inverse sine, to 1 decimal place.

Key idea

The 110° angle is already obtuse, so must be acute. There is only one answer.

No pair at all? Three sides and no angle also means the cosine rule, rearranged to give the angle. A triangle has sides 5 cm, 8 cm and 11 cm. Find its largest angle .

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The largest angle faces the longest side, 11. In the rearranged cosine rule, the side facing the angle you want is the one that is subtracted.

  2. 2

    — Square each side. Multiply 2 × 5 × 8 = 80.

  3. 3

    — 25 + 64 = 89, and 89 − 121 = −32. Keep the minus sign.

  4. 4

    — Inverse cosine of a negative number gives an obtuse angle. That fits: the longest side faces the biggest angle.

Common mistake

Dropping the minus sign. Using gives 66.4°, an acute angle that could never face the longest side.

5. Which Method? Read the Question

Mark on the diagram what you know, then match it.

Key idea

Write the rule before the numbers. It earns a method mark even if the arithmetic slips.
