1. What a Fraction Is as a Decimal
A fraction is a division. means 3 divided by 4, and that is 0.75.
Formula
The top number is the numerator. The bottom number is the denominator. Learn these by heart:
| Fraction | Decimal |
| 0.5 | |
| 0.25 | |
| 0.75 | |
| 0.2 | |
| 0.1 |
Key idea
Every fraction less than 1 gives a decimal less than 1. It starts with 0 and a point.
2. Tenths and Hundredths
The most common 1-mark question: write as a decimal. If the bottom is 10 or 100, just read it off.
Rule
Over 10: one digit after the point. Over 100: two digits after the point.
Worked example
- 1
— Over 10 means tenths. Tenths are the first place after the point, so the 7 goes there.
- 2
— Over 100 means hundredths. That needs two digits after the point, and 29 fills both.
- 3
— Still hundredths, so two digits. 3 is only one digit, so a zero holds the tenths place.
Common mistake
Writing as 0.3. That is 3 tenths, which is 30 hundredths. Over 100 needs two digits: 0.03.
3. Make the Bottom 10 or 100
The next 1-mark question: write as a decimal. Multiply the top and the bottom by the same number to get 10 or 100.
Worked example
- 1
— 20 × 5 = 100, so multiply by 5. Do it to the top too, so the fraction keeps its value.
- 2
— 9 × 5 = 45 on top. The bottom is now 100.
- 3
— Over 100 means hundredths: read off two digits after the point.
Worked example
- 1
— 5 × 2 = 10, so multiply the top and the bottom by 2.
- 2
— 4 × 2 = 8 on top. The bottom is now 10.
- 3
— Over 10 means tenths: one digit after the point.
Common mistake
Only changing the bottom. is not . Whatever you do to the bottom, do to the top.
4. Divide Top by Bottom
The 1-mark question with eighths: write as a decimal. 8 does not go into 10 or 100, so divide.
Worked example
- 1
— The fraction line means divide the top by the bottom.
- 2
— Write 5 as 5.000. The zeros do not change its value, but they give you digits to divide into.
- 3
— 8 does not go into 5, so the answer starts 0. and the 5 is carried.
- 4
— 8 × 6 = 48, so 6 with 2 left. 6 is the first digit after the point.
- 5
— Carry the 2 onto the next 0 to make 20. 8 × 2 = 16, so 2 with 4 left.
- 6
— Carry the 4 to make 40. 8 × 5 = 40 exactly. Nothing is left, so stop.
- 7
— Read the digits in order after the point.
Key idea
A shortcut: , so .
Common mistake
Writing as 5.8 or 0.58. The fraction line means divide, not a decimal point.
5. Fractions Bigger Than 1
Some questions give a fraction bigger than 1, like or . The whole number goes in front of the point.
Worked example
- 1
— A mixed number is a whole number plus a fraction. Change the fraction on its own.
- 2
— Multiply the top and the bottom by 2, because 5 × 2 = 10 and tenths are easy to read.
- 3
— Over 10 means one digit after the point.
- 4
— Put the whole number back in front of the point.
Worked example
- 1
— The top is bigger than the bottom, so the answer will be bigger than 1.
- 2
— 4 goes into 11 2 whole times with 3 left, so .
- 3
— A fraction you know by heart from the first card.
- 4
— The 2 goes in front of the point and 0.75 after it.
Common mistake
Writing as 2.35. The 3 and 5 make a fraction, not two digits. , so the answer is 2.6.
6. Will the Decimal Stop?
A question may list fractions and ask which one gives a decimal that stops (a terminating decimal). You can tell without dividing.
Rule
First simplify the fraction. Then split the bottom number into primes. Only 2s and 5s: the decimal stops. Any other prime, like 3 or 7: it goes on for ever.
Worked example
- 1
— The bottom has a 3, so goes on for ever.
- 2
— Only 3s. This one goes on for ever too.
- 3
— The 2s are fine, but the 3 makes it go on for ever.
- 4
— 15 has a 3, but simplify first: divide the top and the bottom by 3. The 3 cancels.
- 5
— The bottom is now only a 5, so the decimal stops. is the answer.
When it does not stop, divide as usual and watch the remainder come back.
Worked example
- 1
— 3 does not go into 2, so the answer starts 0. and the 2 is carried.
- 2
— 3 × 6 = 18, so 6 with 2 left.
- 3
— Carry the 2 again: the same 20, the same 6. It will repeat for ever.
- 4
— A recurring decimal. If the question asks you to round, write 0.667 (3 decimal places).
Common mistake
Writing as 0.6. That is . Two thirds is 0.666...
7. Fractions and Decimals Together
The 2-mark question mixes a fraction and a decimal: add them, subtract them, or find the number halfway between. Change the fraction to a decimal first.
Worked example
- 1
— The question. You cannot add a fraction and a decimal as they are, so make both decimals.
- 2
— Multiply the top and the bottom by 5, because 20 × 5 = 100.
- 3
— 55 hundredths is 0.55: two digits after the point.
- 4
— Now both are decimals, so add them. Line up the points.
Worked example
- 1
— The question. Halfway means the middle of the two numbers.
- 2
— Multiply the top and the bottom by 4, because 25 × 4 = 100.
- 3
— 12 hundredths is 0.12.
- 4
— Add the two numbers.
- 5
— Halve the total to land exactly in the middle.
- 6
— Check: the gap on each side is the same, so 0.3 really is halfway.
Worked example
- 1
— The question. Difference means the bigger number minus the smaller one.
- 2
— Multiply the top and the bottom by 5, because 20 × 5 = 100.
- 3
— 0.85 is bigger than 0.59, so take 0.59 away from it.
Key idea
Show every line. One of the 2 marks is for the working, like , so you can still score if the last sum slips.
Common mistake
Forgetting to halve. Adding gives 0.6, but halfway is the middle, so divide by 2.
8. Which Method? Read the Question
Look at the bottom number first.
| You see | You do |
| bottom is 10 or 100 | read it off: tenths or hundredths |
| bottom is 2, 4, 5, 20, 25, 50 | make the bottom 10 or 100 |
| bottom is 8 or 40 | divide top by bottom |
| add, subtract, or halfway between | fraction to decimal first |
| write 0.23 as a fraction | Converting Decimals to Fractions |
| a mixed number, or top bigger than bottom | whole number in front of the point |
| which fraction gives a decimal that stops? | simplify, then look for only 2s and 5s on the bottom |
| write as a decimal | divide: the 6 repeats, 0.666... |
| write 0.666... as a fraction | Recurring Decimals (Extended) |
| put fractions and decimals in order | Ordering Values |
| write it as a percentage | Introduction to Percentages |
Key idea
Check the size. is a bit more than a half, so its decimal must be a bit more than 0.5.
