Direct Proportion in Real Life
Cambridge IGCSE Maths 0580 · Edexcel IGCSE Maths 4MA1 · Cambridge O Level Maths 4024
1. What Direct Proportion Means
Two amounts are in direct proportion when they grow together. Make twice as many cakes and you need twice as much flour.
| Cakes | Flour |
| 1 | 25 grams |
| 10 | 250 grams |
| 20 | 500 grams |
Rule
The unitary method: find the amount for one, then multiply by how many you need.
Careful: a fixed charge breaks this. A plumber charges £20 to come out, plus £30 for each hour. Does 4 hours cost twice as much as 2 hours?
Worked example
- 1
— The hourly part for 2 hours: £30 for each of the 2 hours.
- 2
— Add the fixed £20. 2 hours cost £80.
- 3
— The hourly part for 4 hours.
- 4
— Add the fixed £20 once only. 4 hours cost £140.
- 5
— Twice the hours did not cost twice as much, because the £20 is paid once. So this is not direct proportion.
Common mistake
Working out the cost of 1 hour as £80 ÷ 2 = £40. That hides the fixed charge inside. Multiply the hourly rate first, then add the fixed charge once.
2. Scaling a Recipe
The 2-mark question: a recipe or price is given for one number, and you need it for another. Divide to get one, then multiply.
A recipe uses 250 g of flour for 10 cakes. How much flour is needed for 16 cakes?
Worked example
- 1
— Write down what the recipe says. We want 16 cakes, so first find the flour for one cake.
- 2
— The 250 g is shared over 10 cakes, so divide by 10. That is the flour for one cake.
- 3
— Each of the 16 cakes needs 25 g, so multiply by 16.
Part (b) often goes backwards: how many cakes does 600 grams make?
Worked example
- 1
— Each cake uses 25 g, so count how many 25s fit into 600.
- 2
— Check: 24 cakes at 25 g each use exactly 600 g.
Common mistake
Adding instead of multiplying. 16 cakes is 6 more than 10, but you cannot just add 6 grams of flour.
3. Shortcut: The Multiplier
When the new number is an easy multiple of the old one, skip the “one” line and use a multiplier. It is the same method in one move.
Formula
Key idea
Old amount: what the recipe uses. Old number: how many it makes. New number: how many you want. The fraction is the multiplier: how many times bigger the new batch is.
A rice dish for 6 people uses 240 g of rice and 90 g of butter. How much rice is needed for 15 people?
Worked example
- 1
— Find the multiplier: 15 people is 2.5 times as many as 6 people.
- 2
— Multiply the old amount by the same multiplier. Everything in the recipe grows 2.5 times.
Backwards: Sam uses 360 g of butter. How many people does his dish serve?
Worked example
- 1
— Compare butter with butter: Sam uses 4 times as much as the recipe.
- 2
— The number of people grows by the same multiplier, 4.
Common mistake
Turning the fraction upside down: 240 × 6 ÷ 15 = 96 g. More people need more rice, so the answer must be bigger than 240 g.
4. Finding One Price From a Total
The 4-mark question: a total cost mixes two items. Use the item you know to find the one you don't.
The question: 5 kg of apples cost £6.40. 2 kg of apples and 3 kg of pears cost £7.21. Find the cost of 1 kg of pears.
Worked example
- 1
— Start with the apples. They are the only fruit with a price of their own.
- 2
— Share £6.40 over 5 kg. That is the price of 1 kg of apples.
- 3
— The basket has 2 kg of apples, so work out what they cost.
- 4
— Take the apples out of the total. What is left paid for the 3 kg of pears only.
- 5
— Share that over the 3 kg of pears to get the price of 1 kg.
- 6
— Check: 3 kg of pears plus the apples gives the £7.21 total.
Common mistake
Dividing £7.21 by 5 kg. That mixes apples and pears. Take the apples away first.
5. Is There Enough?
The 4-mark question: “Does she have enough?” Work out what is needed, then compare it with what she has.
A recipe for 16 biscuits uses 280 g of sugar. Mia has 0.5 kg of sugar. Does she have enough for 30 biscuits?
Worked example
- 1
— Write down the recipe. Find the sugar for one biscuit first.
- 2
— Share 280 g over 16 biscuits. That is the sugar for one biscuit.
- 3
— Multiply by 30. This is the sugar she needs.
- 4
— Change kg to grams so both amounts use the same unit. 1 kg = 1000 g.
- 5
— Compare: she has less sugar than she needs.
- 6
— Answer with numbers: “No, she needs 525 g but has only 500 g. She is 25 g short.”
Common mistake
Writing just “No”. The marks are for the working: show 525 grams needed and 500 grams owned.
Key idea
Change kg to grams (or minutes to seconds) before you compare.
6. The Greatest Number You Can Make
The 4-mark question: you have a pile of ingredients. How many can you make? Check every ingredient.
| For 12 muffins | You have |
| 150 grams butter | 680 grams |
| 90 grams sugar | 500 grams |
| 240 grams flour | 1.5 kg |
Worked example
- 1
— Butter for one muffin: share the recipe’s 150 g over 12 muffins.
- 2
— How many muffins the butter you have could make on its own.
- 3
— Sugar for one muffin.
- 4
— The sugar could make about 66 muffins.
- 5
— Change kg to grams to match the recipe.
- 6
— Flour for one muffin.
- 7
— The flour could make 75 muffins.
- 8
— Every muffin needs all three, so the butter runs out first. 54.4 rounds down to 54.
Common mistake
Rounding 54.4 up to 55. The 55th muffin needs butter you do not have, so round down.
7. Round Up or Round Down?
Your calculator gives a decimal, but you can only buy whole bags or whole items. The question tells you which way to round.
12 bread rolls use 180 g of flour. Flour is sold in 500 g bags. How many bags are needed for 70 rolls?
Worked example
- 1
— Flour for one roll.
- 2
— Flour for 70 rolls.
- 3
— That is 2.1 bags of flour.
- 4
— Round up. 2 bags hold only 1000 g, which is not enough, and you cannot buy part of a bag.
Now the other way: Lina has £15. A notebook costs £1.75. How many can she buy, and how much change does she get?
Worked example
- 1
— How many notebooks £15 covers.
- 2
— Round down. She cannot pay for a 9th notebook.
- 3
— What the 8 notebooks cost.
- 4
— Her change. Check: £1.00 is less than £1.75, so she really cannot buy another.
Memory trick
Need enough? Round up. How many can you make or afford? Round down.
8. Best Buy: Compare One Unit
Which pack is better value? Find the price of the same amount in each, such as 100 grams.
Worked example
- 1
— The small pack. 400 g is 4 lots of 100 g.
- 2
— Share the price over the 4 lots: 70p for 100 g in the small pack.
- 3
— The big pack. 600 g is 6 lots of 100 g.
- 4
— Share the price over the 6 lots: 65p for 100 g in the big pack.
- 5
— Same amount of food, so now the prices can be compared directly.
- 6
— It costs less for each 100 g. Write the 65p and 70p in your answer as your reason.
Common mistake
Picking the pack with the lower price tag. £2.80 is less, but you get less too.
9. Rates Over Time
Rates like “12 bottles every 15 minutes” are direct proportion too. Make the time units match before you divide.
A machine fills 12 bottles every 15 minutes. How many bottles does it fill in 3 hours?
Worked example
- 1
— Change hours to minutes, so both times use the same unit.
- 2
— Count the blocks of 15 minutes in 180 minutes.
- 3
— The machine fills 12 bottles in each block.
Is it fast enough? A runner does 4 laps in 7 minutes at a steady pace. Can she run 25 laps in under 45 minutes?
Worked example
- 1
— Time for one lap.
- 2
— Time for 25 laps.
- 3
— Yes. Say why with numbers: 43.75 minutes is under the 45-minute limit.
Common mistake
Doing 3 ÷ 15 with hours and minutes mixed. Change to the same unit first.
10. Which Method? Read the Question
Find the amount for one first. Then the wording tells you what to do next.
| You see | You do |
| Recipe for 10, make 16 | divide by 10, times 16 |
| Recipe for 6, make 15 | multiplier 15 ÷ 6 = 2.5 |
| Total cost of two items | take away the known one |
| Is there enough? | work out need, then compare |
| Greatest number you can make | check each, pick the smallest |
| How many bags or packs? | round up |
| How many can you buy? | round down, then find the change |
| Which is better value? | price of the same amount |
| Every 15 minutes, for 3 hours | same units first |
| Fixed charge plus a rate | not proportion: add the charge once |
| More workers, fewer days | Inverse Proportion in Real Life |
| and a constant | Direct Proportion: y = kx |
Key idea
Always write the amount for one on its own line. It earns a method mark even if you slip later.
