1. What Is an Integer?

An integer is a whole number. It can be positive, negative or zero, like . A number like is not an integer.

The 1-mark question gives a list and asks you to pick a type of number. Know these words.

WordMeans
Oddends in 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9
Evenends in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8
Multiple of 12in the 12 times table
Factor of 30divides 30 exactly
Primeexactly two factors: 1 and itself
Squarea number times itself
Cubea number times itself, times itself again

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The list. Test one word at a time against these numbers.

  2. 2

    — Prime: no number from 2 to 16 divides 17 exactly, so its only factors are 1 and 17.

  3. 3

    — A cube number: it is 3 times itself, times itself again.

  4. 4

    — A square number: it is 3 times itself.

  5. 5

    — So 15 is a factor of 30: it divides 30 with nothing left over.

  6. 6

    — Both divide exactly, so 36 is a multiple of both 4 and 6. It is in both times tables.

  7. 7

    — Even: it ends in 0, so it divides by 2 exactly.

Common mistake

Picking 9 or 15 as prime because they are odd. , so it is not prime. And 1 is not prime either.

2. Sharing and Leftovers

The 4-mark question: share things out, as many as possible each, and find what is left over. Find the total, divide, and keep the remainder.

There are 6 bags of 20 sweets. They are shared equally between 26 children. How many sweets are left?

Worked example

  1. 1

    — First find all the sweets: 6 bags with 20 in each.

  2. 2

    — Divide by the number of children to see how many each could get.

  3. 3

    — Round DOWN. A child cannot get 0.6 of a sweet, and 5 each would need 130 sweets.

  4. 4

    — Multiply back to find how many sweets are handed out.

  5. 5

    — Left over is all the sweets minus the ones handed out, so 16 are left.

Rule

Round DOWN for how many each. The left over is the total minus what was given out.

Common mistake

Mixing units. With 5 metres of ribbon cut into 40 cm pieces, change to 500 cm first: 500 ÷ 40 gives 12 pieces, with 20 cm left.

3. Change After Buying

Another 3-mark question: buy as many as you can with some money, then find the change. It is the leftovers method with prices.

You have $25. A book costs $3.60. How many books can you buy, and how much change do you get?

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Divide the money by the price to see how many books fit.

  2. 2

    — Round DOWN to 6. You cannot buy 0.94 of a book, and 7 books cost $25.20, more than you have.

  3. 3

    — Multiply back to find what the 6 books cost.

  4. 4

    — The change is your money minus what you spent: $3.40. Money always gets two decimal places.

Key idea

Show every line. Marks are given for the division and for the multiplying back, so you can score even if the last answer slips.

Common mistake

Giving $0.94 as the change. The .94 is part of a book, not money left over. Multiply back, then subtract.

4. Sums and Differences

The 1-mark table question: how many more, how much longer, or the difference between two numbers. Take the smaller from the bigger.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — “How much bigger” means take the smaller number from the bigger one.

  2. 2

    — Subtract in columns, units under units. Borrow when the top digit is smaller. This is the difference.

  3. 3

    — Check: add the difference back onto the smaller number. You get the bigger one, so it is right.

Some questions say one value is a given amount more than a value in the table. Then you add.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — A river is 3486 km long. Another is 1957 km longer. “Longer” means add the extra on.

  2. 2

    — Add in columns, carrying 1 whenever a column passes 9. The longer river is 5443 km.

  3. 3

    — Check: the gap between the two rivers is the 1957 you were given.

Common mistake

In a column, taking the smaller digit from the bigger one. For 2 take away 6, borrow from the next column.

5. Missing Numbers: Undo It

A box hides a number in a calculation. Undo the calculation with the opposite operation, then check.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — 468 was added to the box.

  2. 2

    — Taking away undoes adding. Check: 447 + 468 = 915.

  3. 3

    — This time the box was multiplied by 24.

  4. 4

    — Dividing undoes multiplying. Check: 70 × 24 = 1680.

When the box is the number you divide BY, do not multiply. Divide the two numbers you know.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — 3888 shared into the box’s number of groups gives 24.

  2. 2

    — So 3888 shared into 24 groups gives the box. Swap the box and the 24.

  3. 3

    — Check: 3888 ÷ 162 = 24, so 162 is right.

“I think of a number, divide it by 3, then take the square root. I get 5.” Start at the end and undo each step, last one first.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The answer at the end. Work backwards from here.

  2. 2

    — The last step was a square root, so undo it by squaring.

  3. 3

    — Before that you divided by 3, so undo it by multiplying by 3. The number is 75.

  4. 4

    — Check forwards: you get 5, so 75 is right.

Common mistake

For 3888 ÷ □ = 24, working out 3888 × 24. Multiplying only undoes dividing when the box is the number being divided.

6. Reading a Scale

The 1-mark question: write down the number at the arrow, or mark a number with an arrow. First work out what one small gap is worth.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Find the jump between two labels that sit next to each other.

  2. 2

    — There are 5 gaps between the labels, so each gap is worth 20.

  3. 3

    — The arrow is 3 gaps past 200, so add three 20s.

Scales between whole numbers work the same way. Here the labels are 34 and 35, with 5 gaps between them.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The jump between the two labels is 1.

  2. 2

    — 5 gaps share that 1, so each gap is worth 0.2.

  3. 3

    — The arrow is 4 gaps past 34, so add four lots of 0.2.

  4. 4

    — To mark 34.4 instead, first find how far it is past 34.

  5. 5

    — That is 2 gaps, so draw the arrow at the 2nd mark after 34.

Common mistake

Counting the marks, not the gaps. Four marks between the labels make 5 gaps.

7. Halfway Between Two Numbers

Exams ask for the number exactly halfway between two numbers, often decimals. This formula finds it.

Formula

and are the two numbers. Add them, then divide by 2.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Add the two numbers, lining up the decimal points.

  2. 2

    — Halve the total. 5.6 is halfway.

  3. 3

    — Check: the distance from the smaller number up to 5.6.

  4. 4

    — The distance from 5.6 up to the bigger number is the same, so 5.6 is exactly in the middle.

Key idea

This can be worth 2 marks. Writing (3.8 + 7.4) ÷ 2 earns a mark for working, even if the sum slips.

Common mistake

Answering 1.8. That is half the gap, not the halfway number. Add it to the smaller number: 3.8 + 1.8 = 5.6.

8. Making Numbers from Cards

The 1-mark question: arrange digit cards to make the largest, smallest, even or odd number. Here the cards are 3, 8, 1 and 6.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Biggest digit first. The first place (thousands) is worth the most, so it gets the 8.

  2. 2

    — Smallest digit first, then the next smallest, so each place holds as little as it can.

  3. 3

    — An even number must end in an even digit.

  4. 4

    — End in 6, so the 8 is free to go first. Then 3, 1, biggest first. (6318 is smaller.)

  5. 5

    — An odd number must end in an odd digit.

  6. 6

    — End in 3, so the 1 is free to go first. Then 6, 8, smallest first. (3681 is bigger.)

Key idea

Fix the last digit first, then put the rest in order. A multiple of 5 ends in 0 or 5. With two cards you can make the prime 13, or 16, a multiple of 8.

Common mistake

Giving 8631 as the largest even number. It ends in 1, so it is odd.

9. Which Method? Read the Question

The words in the question tell you what to do.
