1. A Net Is the Solid Laid Flat
A net is what you get when you cut a box along some edges and open it out flat. Every face of the solid becomes one flat piece.
| Solid | Pieces in the net |
| Cube | 6 squares |
| Cuboid | 6 rectangles, in 3 pairs |
| Triangular prism | 2 triangles, 3 rectangles |
| Square-based pyramid | 1 square, 4 triangles |
| Cylinder | 2 circles, 1 rectangle |
Rule
Count the pieces of the net and you have counted the faces.
Key idea
Puzzle: how many different nets fold up into a cube? Not counting turned or flipped copies, there are exactly 11. Try to sketch them all. Clue: none of them has more than four squares in a row.
2. Name the Solid
The most common 1-mark question: write down the mathematical name of this 3D shape. Look at the ends and the top.
| You see | Its name |
| Same shape all the way through | a prism, named by its end |
| All six faces square | cube |
| Six rectangles | cuboid |
| A base and a point on top | a pyramid, named by its base |
| Two circles and a curved side | cylinder |
| A circle and a point | cone |
| Round all over | sphere |
Common mistake
Calling a triangular prism a pyramid. A prism has two matching ends. A pyramid rises to one point.
3. Count the Faces
The 1-mark question: how many faces has the shape? Picture its net and count the pieces, including the ones hidden at the back.
| Solid | Faces |
| Prism with an end of n sides | |
| Pyramid with a base of n sides |
Worked example
- 1
— Name the end first. A pentagon has 5 sides, so n = 5.
- 2
— Each side of one end is joined to the other end by a rectangle, so there is one rectangle per side.
- 3
— Add the 2 pentagon ends. This matches the rule n + 2.
Common mistake
Counting only the faces you can see in the drawing. The back and the bottom are faces too.
4. Count the Edges and Vertices
The 1-mark questions: how many edges, how many vertices? An edge is a line where two faces meet. A vertex is a corner.
| Solid | Edges, vertices |
| Prism, end of n sides | , |
| Pyramid, base of n sides | , |
Worked example
- 1
— Name the end first. A hexagon has 6 sides, so n = 6.
- 2
— Each hexagon end has 6 edges round it, and there are 2 ends.
- 3
— One edge runs from each corner of one end to the matching corner of the other end. 6 corners, so 6 edges.
- 4
— Add the two groups. This matches the rule 3n = 3 × 6.
- 5
— Every corner sits on an end. Each end has 6 corners, and there are 2 ends. This matches 2n.
Common mistake
Mixing up edges and vertices. Edges are lines you could run a finger along. Vertices are the points.
Key idea
Check with faces + vertices − edges = 2. For the hexagonal prism: 8 + 12 − 18 = 2.
Total length of the edges. Some questions ask how much wire or straw you need to make the edges of a cuboid. Use:
Formula
is the length, the width and the height. A cuboid has 12 edges: 4 of each length, which is why you multiply by 4.
Worked example
- 1
— A cuboid 7 cm by 3 cm by 2 cm. Read off the three different lengths.
- 2
— Add one edge of each length: 12 cm.
- 3
— Each length appears 4 times, so multiply by 4. If you had 60 cm of wire, 60 − 48 = 12 cm would be left.
5. Drawing a Net on a Grid
The most common 3-mark question: complete the net of a cuboid on a 1 cm grid. One face is usually drawn for you. Here the cuboid is 4 cm by 3 cm by 2 cm.
Worked example
- 1
— List the three face sizes. A cuboid has two faces of each size, so you need 6 rectangles.
- 2
— Say the drawn face is the 4 cm by 3 cm base. Every new face must touch an edge of the same length.
- 3
— Fold up the front and the back. They share the 4 cm edge, and their other side is the height, 2 cm.
- 4
— Fold up the two ends. They share the 3 cm edge, and they are also 2 cm high.
- 5
— The lid. It folds over from the top edge of the back face, so it is the same size as the base.
- 6
— Check: two of each size, six in all, and no two fold onto the same side.
Key idea
Each face drawn the right size in the right place earns marks, so draw every face you can. Draw the fold lines between the faces too: a net drawn as an outline only loses marks.
Common mistake
Putting two faces where they would land on top of each other when folded. Each face must fold to a different side.
Common mistake
Drawing 6 faces for an open box. A box with no top has only 5 faces.
6. Nets of Prisms and Pyramids
Exams also ask for the net of a triangular prism or a square-based pyramid. The rule is the same: faces that fold together share an edge of the same length.
A right-angled triangular prism: the triangle has sides 3 cm, 4 cm and 5 cm, and the prism is 8 cm long.
Worked example
- 1
— One rectangle for each side of the triangle. Each is as long as the prism, 8 cm.
- 2
— Draw the three rectangles side by side in one strip, in the order 3, 4, 5, so they can wrap round the triangle.
- 3
— Attach one triangle to each short end of the 4 cm rectangle. They go on opposite sides, because the two ends of a prism are at opposite ends.
- 4
— Draw the 4 cm side along the rectangle, and the 3 cm side at a right angle, next to the 3 cm rectangle. Joining their ends gives the 5 cm side without measuring.
A square-based pyramid: the base is 6 cm by 6 cm, and each triangle has base 6 cm and height 4 cm.
Worked example
- 1
— Draw the square first. Every triangle sits on one of its sides.
- 2
— Put one triangle on each side of the square, pointing outwards, with its 6 cm side on the square.
- 3
— Mark the tip 4 cm straight out from the middle of each side, then join it to both ends of that side.
- 4
— Check with Pythagoras: half of 6 is 3, so each sloping side is 5 cm. All four triangles match, so their tips meet when folded.
Common mistake
Drawing a triangle with its sloping side as the height. The height goes straight out from the middle of the base, at a right angle.
7. Find a Missing Length First
Some questions give the volume instead of all three lengths. Find the missing length before you draw.
Formula
is the volume, and are the length and width of the base, and is the height. It comes from : divide both sides by the base area.
Worked example
- 1
— A cuboid has volume 30 cm³ and a 5 cm by 2 cm base. The height is missing.
- 2
— Work out the base area first: 10 cm².
- 3
— Divide the volume by the base area. The height is 3 cm.
- 4
— Check by multiplying back. It gives the volume, so now draw the net of a 5 by 2 by 3 cuboid.
Key idea
Write the division down. It earns a mark for working even if your drawing goes wrong.
A cube from the area of one face: one face has area 25 cm².
Worked example
- 1
— Every face of a cube is the same square, and a square's area is edge × edge.
- 2
— So the edge is the square root of the area.
- 3
— Draw six 5 cm squares, for example a row of four with one above and one below the second square.
Key idea
In the net of a cylinder, the rectangle wraps round the circles. The side that wraps round equals the circumference, πd. The other side is the cylinder's height.
8. Which Points Meet When Folded?
Some 1-mark questions label a net and ask which face is opposite, or which point joins another, when it is folded. Fold one face at a time in your head.
A cube net: a row of four squares, numbered 1 to 4, with square T above square 2 and square B below it.
Worked example
- 1
— Four squares in a row wrap round the cube like a belt.
- 2
— In a straight row, squares two apart fold to opposite faces, because the square between them becomes a side.
- 3
— The squares above and below the row become the top and the bottom, so they are opposite.
- 4
— On a dice, opposite faces add up to 7. If square 1 shows 2, square 3 must show 5.
Rule
Edges that fold together are the same length. Where two faces meet at an inside corner of the net, the edges either side of it close up like a book, so their end points join.
Key idea
Each corner of a cube or cuboid is where 3 faces meet. So up to 3 points of the net can join at one corner: check every face that touches it.
Common mistake
Saying two squares that touch in the net are opposite. Squares that share an edge always fold to faces that meet.
Key idea
Not every 6 squares make a cube. A net with 5 squares in a row, or 4 squares in a 2 by 2 block, will not fold up.
9. Which Method? Read the Question
Name the solid first. Then the right method follows.
| You see | You do |
| Name this shape | look at the ends: prism or pyramid? |
| How many faces? | count the net's pieces |
| How many edges? | prism , pyramid |
| How many vertices? | prism , pyramid |
| Total length of the edges | |
| Draw or complete a net | attach each face along an edge of the same length |
| Volume given, a length missing | first |
| Which point or face meets? | fold one face at a time |
| Area of the net | Surface Area of a Cuboid and Cylinder |
Key idea
For a prism or pyramid, n is the number of sides on the end or base.
