1. What a Rational Number Is
A rational number can be written as one integer over another, like . The bottom, , must not be zero.
To show a number is rational, write it as a fraction. The number can look like anything to start with.
Worked example
- 1
— 2.35 has two decimal places, so it is 235 hundredths. That is already one integer over another.
- 2
— Divide top and bottom by 5 to simplify. Simplest form is neater, and it is still integer over integer.
- 3
— Turn the mixed number into thirds: 3 wholes are 3 × 3 = 9 thirds, plus the 2 thirds.
- 4
— 9 + 2 = 11, so it is 11 over 3.
- 5
— Check it: 7 ÷ 9 = 0.777…. Every repeating decimal can be written as a fraction. The Recurring Decimals lesson shows how to prove it.
- 6
— 0.7 × 0.7 = 0.49, so the square root comes out exactly. It does not go on for ever.
- 7
— 0.7 is 7 tenths, so this root is one integer over another.
Key idea
Each coloured answer is one integer over another. That is all the proof you need.
Common mistake
Thinking a rational number must look like a fraction. It only has to be possible to write it as one: .
2. Will the Decimal Stop or Repeat?
The 2-mark question: without a calculator, say whether a fraction gives a decimal that stops or one that repeats for ever. Exams call these terminating (stops) and recurring (repeats). Look only at the bottom.
Worked example
- 1
— Write the bottom as primes. 7 and 40 share no factor, so it is already simplified. Only 2s and 5s.
- 2
— Multiply top and bottom by 25, because 40 × 25 = 1000. Since 10 = 2 × 5, a bottom of only 2s and 5s can always be made into 10, 100, 1000…
- 3
— 175 thousandths is 0.175. It stops, so it is terminating.
- 4
— Now . Write 12 as primes: a factor 3 sneaks in. 7 and 12 share no factor, so the 3 cannot cancel.
- 5
— 10, 100, 1000… are made only of 2s and 5s, so a bottom with a 3 can never become one of them. The 3s go on for ever: recurring.
Rule
Simplify first. If the bottom has no prime factors except 2 and 5, the decimal terminates. Any other prime factor makes it recur.
Common mistake
Not simplifying. has a 3 below, but it is , which stops.
3. A Rational Number Between Two Others
The 1-mark question: write down a rational number between two numbers. Halfway always works: add them, then halve.
Worked example
- 1
— Add the two numbers. Change both to sixths first, so the bottoms match.
- 2
— 2 + 3 = 5, so the total is 5 sixths.
- 3
— Halve the total. Half of the sum of two numbers is always exactly halfway between them.
- 4
— Check with the same bottom: and . 5 is between 4 and 6, so it fits.
Between two roots, square your guess to check it.
Worked example
- 1
— Squaring keeps positive numbers in order, so your number squared must land between 2 and 3.
- 2
— Try 1.4. 1.96 is less than 2, so 1.4 is too small.
- 3
— Try 1.5. 2.25 is between 2 and 3, so it fits. And , so it is rational.
Common mistake
Thinking nothing fits between 0.7 and 0.8. Add another digit: 0.75, or 0.71, or 0.799. There is always another one.
4. Which Method? Read the Question
The question's words tell you which idea to use.
| You see | You do |
| Show it is rational | write it as integer over integer |
| Terminating or recurring? | simplify, then look for 2s and 5s below |
| A rational number between | add and halve, or square to check |
| Decimal to fraction, full method | Converting Decimals to Fractions |
| Prove a repeat is a fraction | Recurring Decimals |
| Counting numbers only | Natural Numbers |
| Roots that never end | Irrational Numbers |
Key idea
Every integer, every fraction, every decimal that stops and every decimal that repeats is rational.
