الشرح بالعربية، والرياضيات كما تظهر في ورقة الامتحان بالإنجليزية، لأن الامتحان بالإنجليزية.

1. What a Fraction Is

الكسر جزء من كل: نقسم الشيء الكامل إلى أجزاء متساوية ثم نأخذ بعضها. المقام، وهو الرقم في الأسفل، يخبرك كم جزءًا متساويًا قُسم إليه الكل. والبسط، وهو الرقم في الأعلى، يخبرك كم جزءًا أخذت. فمثلًا في البيتزا: نقسمها شرائح متساوية بعدد المقام، ونأخذ منها عددًا يساوي البسط، والباقي هو ما لم نأخذه. الخطأ الشائع: الأجزاء غير المتساوية لا تمثل كسرًا، فكل الأجزاء يجب أن تكون بالحجم نفسه.

A fraction is part of a whole. Cut the whole into equal pieces, then take some of them.

Formula

Numerator (the top)	how many of those pieces you take

So $\frac{3}{8}$ of a pizza means: cut it into 8 equal slices and take 3 of them. 5 slices are left.

Common mistake

Pieces that are not equal. A bar cut into 4 uneven bits does not show quarters. Every piece must be the same size.

2. Bigger Bottom, Smaller Pieces

المقام يحدد حجم كل جزء: كلما زاد عدد الأجزاء صغر كل جزء، لأن الشيء نفسه يُقسم على عدد أكبر. لذلك الكسر الذي بسطه واحد يصغر كلما كبر مقامه. إذا تساوى البسط والمقام فقد أخذت كل الأجزاء، فالكسر يساوي واحدًا صحيحًا. وإذا كان البسط أكبر من المقام فالكسر أكبر من الواحد، فافصل منه واحدًا صحيحًا واكتب الباقي كسرًا لتحصل على عدد كسري. والكسر أيضًا قسمة: البسط مقسوم على المقام. الخطأ الشائع: الظن أن الكسر ذا المقام الأكبر أكبر، والصحيح أن من يتقاسمون مع عدد أكبر من الناس يأخذون شرائح أصغر.

The bottom number sets the size of each piece. The more pieces you cut, the smaller each one gets.

Worked example

$\frac{1}{2} > \frac{1}{3}$ — Cut a whole into 2 and each piece is half of it. Cut it into 3 and each piece is smaller, because the same whole is shared more ways.

$\frac{1}{4} > \frac{1}{6}$ — Same idea: 6 equal pieces are smaller than 4 equal pieces of the same whole. Bigger bottom, smaller piece.

$\frac{4}{4} = 1$ — The top equals the bottom: you take all 4 of the 4 pieces, so you have the whole thing.

$\frac{5}{4} = \frac{4}{4} + \frac{1}{4}$ — The top is bigger than the bottom. Split it: 4 quarters make one whole, and 1 quarter is left over.

$\frac{5}{4} = 1 \frac{1}{4}$ — Swap $\frac{4}{4}$ for 1. So $\frac{5}{4}$ is more than one whole: 1 whole and 1 quarter.

Key idea

A fraction is also a division: $\frac{3}{4}$ means $3 \div 4$ . Share 3 cakes between 4 people and each gets three quarters.

Common mistake

Thinking $\frac{1}{6}$ is bigger than $\frac{1}{4}$ because 6 is bigger than 4. Six people sharing get smaller slices than four.

3. Fractions on a Number Line

الكسور أعداد، ولها مكان على خط الأعداد. الطريقة: قسّم المسافة بين الصفر والواحد إلى فترات متساوية بعدد المقام، فكل فترة جزء واحد. ثم ابدأ من الصفر وعدّ فترات بعدد البسط، وضع العلامة هناك. تحقق بمقارنة موقعك بالمنتصف. وإذا كان البسط أكبر من المقام فاستمر في العد بعد الواحد. الخطأ الشائع: عدّ العلامات بدل الفترات، فابدأ من الصفر وعدّ المسافات بين العلامات.

The 1-mark question: "Mark $\frac{3}{5}$ on the number line." Fractions are numbers, so they have a place on the line.

Worked example

$0 to 1 : 5 equal gaps$ — Split the space from 0 to 1 into 5 equal gaps, because the bottom number is 5. Each gap is one fifth.

$count 3 gaps from 0$ — Start at 0 and move 3 gaps, because the top number is 3. Mark the point there.

$3 > 2.5, so \frac{3}{5} > \frac{1}{2}$ — Check it: halfway is 2.5 of the 5 gaps. 3 gaps is a little more, so the mark should sit just right of the middle.

$\frac{5}{5} = 1$ — After all 5 gaps you reach 1, because five fifths make one whole.

$\frac{7}{5} = 1 \frac{2}{5}$ — Keep counting past 1: 7 gaps is 5 gaps to reach 1, then 2 more. So $\frac{7}{5}$ sits at $1 \frac{2}{5}$ .

Common mistake

Counting the marks instead of the gaps. Start at 0 and count the spaces between the marks.

4. Write It as a Fraction

الامتحانات تسأل كثيرًا: ما الكسر المظلل؟ أو ما الكسر الذي تمثله كمية من كمية أخرى؟ القاعدة: الجزء في البسط، والكل في المقام، وبالوحدة نفسها. في الشكل المظلل: عدّ كل المربعات مظللة وغير مظللة لتحصل على الكل، ثم عدّ المظللة فقط لتحصل على الجزء، ثم بسّط الكسر بقسمة البسط والمقام على أكبر عدد يقسمهما. وفي الكميات بوحدات مختلفة، مثل الساعات والدقائق، حوّل الكميتين إلى الوحدة نفسها أولًا، والكمية التي بعد كلمة «من» هي الكل. الخطأ الشائع: خلط الساعات بالدقائق في الكسر نفسه.

Exams often ask “what fraction is shaded?” or “what fraction of 2 hours is 50 minutes?”. The whole always goes on the bottom.

1. What fraction is shaded? A rectangle is cut into 12 equal squares and 4 are shaded.

Worked example

$whole = 12$ — Count every square, shaded or not. That total is the whole, so it goes on the bottom.

$part = 4$ — Count only the shaded squares. That is the part, so it goes on top.

$\frac{4}{12}$ — Part over whole.

$\frac{4 \div 4}{12 \div 4} = \frac{1}{3}$ — Divide top and bottom by 4, the biggest number that goes into both. Exams usually want the simplest form.

2. Different units. What fraction of 2 hours is 50 minutes?

Worked example

$2 hours = 120 minutes$ — Put both amounts in the same unit first. 1 hour is 60 minutes, so 2 × 60 = 120.

$\frac{50}{120}$ — The amount after “of” is the whole, so 120 goes on the bottom. The part, 50, goes on top.

$\frac{50 \div 10}{120 \div 10} = \frac{5}{12}$ — Divide top and bottom by 10. 5 and 12 share no other factor, so this is the simplest form.

Memory trick

Part on top, whole on the bottom, same units.

Common mistake

Writing $\frac{50}{2}$ . Hours and minutes do not mix. Change 2 hours into 120 minutes first.

5. Which Method? Read the Question

استخدم كلمات السؤال لتعرف ماذا تفعل. المقام يعني عدد الأجزاء المتساوية، والبسط يعني عدد الأجزاء التي تأخذها. للمقارنة بين كسرين بسطهما واحد: المقام الأكبر يعني جزءًا أصغر. على خط الأعداد: المقام يحدد عدد الفترات، والبسط يحدد كم فترة تعدّ. وفي «ما الكسر المظلل» أو «ما الكسر من كذا»: الجزء في البسط والكل في المقام وبالوحدة نفسها. وتحقق سريعًا: إذا كان البسط أصغر من المقام فالكسر أقل من واحد صحيح.
