1. What a Rotation Does
A rotation turns a shape about a fixed point, the centre. The image is the same size and is not flipped.
Rule
A rotation needs three things: the angle, the direction (clockwise or anticlockwise) and the centre.
Key idea
You may use tracing paper in the exam. Trace the shape, hold the centre still with your pencil point, and turn the paper.
Key idea
Puzzle: Rotate the year 1961 by 180° and it still reads 1961. Using only the digits 0, 1, 6, 8 and 9, when is the next year that does this? Answer: 6009.
2. Rotating 180° About a Point
The most common 2-mark question: rotate a shape 180° about a point such as (2, 1). Each corner goes through the centre and the same distance out the other side.
Worked example
- 1
— Start from the centre. Every move is counted from it, never from the origin.
- 2
— Take the centre's coordinates away from the corner's (or count squares) to see how far across and up the corner sits.
- 3
— A half turn puts the image on the opposite side of the centre, the same distance away. Reverse both moves.
- 4
— Start at the centre and make the reversed moves: 1 left changes x to 2 − 1, 1 down changes y to 1 − 1.
- 5
— Second corner: its distance from the centre, worked out the same way.
- 6
— Reverse both moves for the half turn.
- 7
— Add the reversed moves to the centre. Brackets round the negatives stop the signs slipping.
- 8
— Third corner: its distance from the centre.
- 9
— Reverse both moves for the half turn.
- 10
— Add the reversed moves to the centre: 2 − 1 = 1 across and 1 − 2 = −1 up.
Key idea
Check: the centre is the midpoint of every corner and its image. For and the middle is .
Common mistake
Turning about (0, 0) when the centre is (2, 1). Count every step from the given centre.
3. Rotating 90° About the Origin
The 2-mark question: rotate 90° clockwise about O, the point (0, 0). A rule does it fast.
Worked example
- 1
— The 90° clockwise rule about (0, 0): swap the two numbers, then change the sign of the number that is now second.
- 2
— Corner (1, 2): swap the two numbers.
- 3
— Change the sign of the second number. 1 becomes −1.
- 4
— Corner (3, 2): swap the two numbers.
- 5
— Change the sign of the second number. 3 becomes −3.
- 6
— Corner (1, 4): swap the two numbers.
- 7
— Change the sign of the second number. 1 becomes −1.
- 8
— A corner with a negative number: swap first, exactly as before.
- 9
— Changing the sign of −3 makes it +3: a minus in front of a minus is a plus.
| About (0, 0) | Rule |
| 90° clockwise | |
| 90° anticlockwise | |
| 180° |
Common mistake
Mixing up the directions. Clockwise is the way a clock's hands go: from 12 towards 3.
4. Rotating 90° About Another Point
The 2-mark question: rotate 90° anticlockwise about (2, 1). The origin rules do not work here, so count steps from the centre and turn them.
Worked example
- 1
— Quarter turn anticlockwise. Start from the centre, because the origin rules do not work here.
- 2
— Corner minus centre gives the moves from the centre to the corner.
- 3
— A quarter turn anticlockwise points what faced right up.
- 4
— It points what faced up to the left.
- 5
— From the centre go 1 left (2 − 1) and 3 up (1 + 3).
- 6
— Second corner: its moves from the centre.
- 7
— Right becomes up and up becomes left.
- 8
— From the centre go 1 left (2 − 1) and 1 up (1 + 1).
- 9
— Third corner: its moves from the centre.
- 10
— Right becomes up and up becomes left.
- 11
— From the centre go 2 left (2 − 2) and 1 up (1 + 1).
Here is the same job turned the other way. Clockwise swaps the directions.
Worked example
- 1
— Now a quarter turn clockwise. Again, start from the centre.
- 2
— Corner minus centre gives the moves from the centre to the corner.
- 3
— A quarter turn clockwise points what faced right down.
- 4
— It points what faced up to the right.
- 5
— From the centre go 1 right (1 + 1) and 3 down (2 + (−3)). Put the negative in brackets.
- 6
— Second corner, 2 − 1 = 1 and 3 − 2 = 1 from the centre. Right becomes down and up becomes right.
- 7
— From the centre go 1 right (1 + 1) and 1 down (2 + (−1)).
Common mistake
Using the origin rule on the coordinates. That only works when the centre is (0, 0).
Key idea
A shape turned the right way but in the wrong place can still earn one of the two marks. So check the direction of the turn first, then the position.
5. Which Method? Read the Question
Look at the angle and the centre.
| You see | You do |
| 180° about a point | through the centre, same distance out |
| 90° about O | use the rule, or tracing paper |
| 90° about another point | count steps from the centre, turn them |
| Describe fully | Describing Transformations |
| A rotation, then another move | Combined Transformations |
Key idea
Check with tracing paper: the image must look turned, never flipped.
