Rotational Symmetry

1. Turn It and It Fits

للشكل تماثل دوراني إذا أمكن تدويره حول مركزه فينطبق تمامًا على حدوده قبل إكمال دورة كاملة. الرتبة هي عدد مرات الانطباق في دورة كاملة، مع عدّ الانطباق الأخير عند العودة إلى البداية. الجدول يبين رتبة أشكال شهيرة، والمضلع المنتظم رتبته تساوي عدد أضلاعه. الرتبة واحد تعني أنه لا يوجد تماثل دوراني، لأن كل شكل ينطبق مرة واحدة بعد الدورة الكاملة. ومن الحياة: رقاقة الثلج لها عادة ستة أذرع متشابهة، لأن جزيئات الماء تترابط في أنماط سداسية عند التجمد.

A shape has rotational symmetry if you can turn it about its centre and it fits exactly onto its outline before a full turn.

The order is how many times it fits in one full turn, counting the last fit back at the start.

Rule

Order 1 means no rotational symmetry. Every shape fits once, after a full turn.

Key idea

Look closely at a snowflake: it usually has six matching arms, so it has rotational symmetry of order 6. This happens because water molecules lock together in hexagon patterns when ice forms.

2. Find the Order

سؤال الدرجة الواحدة: اكتب رتبة التماثل الدوراني للشكل. تخيّل أنك نسخت الشكل على ورق شفاف ثم أدرت النسخة. ابدأ بالدورات الصغيرة: بعد ربع دورة لا ينطبق الشكل، وبعد نصف دورة ينطبق، فهذا انطباق أول. ثم تعيده الدورة الكاملة إلى البداية، وهذا يُعدّ انطباقًا ثانيًا. عدد مرات الانطباق في الدورة الكاملة هو الرتبة. الخطأ الشائع كتابة الرتبة صفرًا لشكل ليس له تماثل دوراني؛ أصغر رتبة هي واحد.

The 1-mark question: write down the order of rotational symmetry of this shape. Picture tracing it, then turning the tracing.

Worked example

$turn the tracing 9 0^{\circ}$ — Test the smaller turns first. After 90° the long sloping sides point the wrong way, so it does not fit.

$turn 18 0^{\circ} : it fits$ — Half a turn swaps the two pairs of sides, so the tracing lands exactly on the outline. That is fit 1.

$turn 18 0^{\circ} more: 36 0^{\circ}$ — A full turn brings it back to the start, and fitting there counts as the second fit.

$order = 2$ — There are 2 fits in one full turn, so the order is 2.

Common mistake

Writing order 0 for a shape with no rotational symmetry. The smallest order is 1.

3. Regular Polygons and Patterns

قد يستخدم السؤال مضلعًا منتظمًا أو إشارة مرور أو نمطًا زخرفيًا. الطريقة: عدّ الأجزاء المتطابقة الموزعة حول المركز. في المضلع المنتظم، أصغر دورة تجعله ينطبق هي الدورة الكاملة مقسومة على عدد الرؤوس، ثم نستمر في إضافة هذه الزاوية حتى نكمل الدورة ونعدّ مرات الانطباق، فتكون الرتبة مساوية لعدد الأضلاع. الخطأ الشائع افتراض أن الرتبة تساوي عدد محاور التماثل؛ متوازي الأضلاع له رتبة لكنه بلا محاور. وانتبه إلى التظليل: إذا ظُلّلت بعض الأجزاء بالتناوب فقد تصبح الرتبة أصغر.

The 1 or 2-mark question can use a regular polygon, a road sign or a pattern. Count the identical parts that go round the centre.

Worked example

$regular pentagon: 5 sides$ — Regular means all sides and angles are equal, so it looks the same from every corner.

$36 0^{\circ} \div 5 = 7 2^{\circ}$ — One corner moves onto the next corner every 72°. This is the smallest turn that fits: a full turn divided by the number of corners.

$72, 144, 216, 288, 360$ — Keep adding 72° to list every turn that fits, up to the full turn.

$count the turns: 5$ — There are 5 fits in one full turn, counting the one at 360°.

$order = 5$ — The order is that count, so a regular polygon has order equal to its number of sides.

Common mistake

Assuming the order equals the number of lines of symmetry. A parallelogram has order 2 but no lines.

Key idea

Shading counts. A regular hexagon split into 6 triangles, with every other triangle shaded, fits every 120°, so its order is 3, not 6.

4. Shade Squares for Order

سؤال الدرجة الواحدة: ظلّل مربعًا إضافيًا ليصبح للشكل تماثل دوراني من الرتبة أربعة حول مركز الشبكة. معنى ذلك أن كل مربع مظلل يجب أن يقع على مربع مظلل بعد ربع دورة. في ربع دورة مع عقارب الساعة ينتقل الصف العلوي إلى العمود الأيمن، والأيمن إلى الصف السفلي، والسفلي إلى العمود الأيسر، والأيسر إلى الصف العلوي. تتبّع كل مربع مظلل إلى موقعه الجديد حتى تكتمل حلقة من أربعة مربعات، والمربع الناقص في الحلقة هو الذي تظلله. وللرتبة اثنين استخدم نصف دورة بدل الربع. ومن الحروف الإنجليزية الكبيرة ما له رتبة اثنين أيضًا.

The 1-mark question: shade one more square so the diagram has rotational symmetry of order 4. The turn is about the centre of the grid.

Order 4 means every shaded square must land on a shaded square after a quarter turn. Here a 4 by 4 grid has shaded squares at (row 1, column 2), (row 2, column 4) and (row 4, column 3).

Worked example

$quarter turn clockwise$ — The top row moves to the right-hand column, the right-hand column to the bottom row, the bottom row to the left-hand column, and the left-hand column to the top row.

$(1, 2) \to (2, 4)$ — The top row square moves to the right-hand column. (2, 4) is shaded.

$(2, 4) \to (4, 3)$ — The right-hand column square moves to the bottom row. (4, 3) is shaded.

$(4, 3) \to (3, 1)$ — The bottom row square moves to the left-hand column. (3, 1) is not shaded.

$(3, 1) \to (1, 2)$ — The next turn brings it back to the start, which closes the ring of four squares.

$shade (3, 1)$ — It is the only square in the ring still missing. Now every turn of 90° fits.

Key idea

For order 2 use a half turn. On a 4 by 4 grid, row $r$ , column $c$ goes to row $5 - r$ , column $5 - c$ .

Key idea

In plain capitals H, I, N, O, S, X and Z have order 2. In the word GRANT only N does.

5. Which Method? Read the Question

تخيّل نسخة شفافة من الشكل تدور حول مركزه. الجدول يلخص: لإيجاد الرتبة عدّ مرات الانطباق في دورة كاملة. المضلع المنتظم رتبته تساوي عدد أضلاعه. لتظليل مربع يحقق رتبة معينة أدِر كل مربع مظلل حول المركز. وإذا سُئلت أي شكل رتبته أكبر من واحد فابحث عن شكل ينطبق قبل إكمال الدورة. أما محاور التماثل والدوران على الشبكة فلهما دروس خاصة. وتذكّر: أصغر دورة تجعل الشكل ينطبق تساوي الدورة الكاملة مقسومة على الرتبة.

Key idea

The smallest turn that fits is 360° ÷ the order.
