1. What a Surd Is

A surd is a square root that is not a whole number, like or . Its decimal never ends, so you keep the root sign: the answer stays exact.

RuleExample

Rule

A root times itself gives a whole number. That one fact clears a surd from the bottom of a fraction.

Key idea

A Babylonian clay tablet about 3,700 years old, now called YBC 7289, shows a square and its diagonal. It gives as about , when the true value is : out by less than one millionth.

2. Rationalise: One Surd Below

The 2-mark question: “rationalise the denominator”. It means: move the root off the bottom of the fraction, without changing the value.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question. A root on the bottom is not allowed in a final answer, so we must clear it.

  2. 2

    — Multiply top and bottom by √5. That is the same as multiplying by 1, so the value does not change.

  3. 3

    — On the bottom, √5 × √5 = 5, a whole number. The root has gone from the bottom.

  4. 4

    — Now cancel the whole numbers: 10 ÷ 5 = 2. Always cancel like this to give the simplest form.

Common mistake

Multiplying only the bottom by the root. Do the same to top and bottom, or the value changes.

3. Rationalise: 3 − √2 Below

The most common question, 3 marks: a bottom like . Times √2 alone will not clear it, so we use this fact:

Formula

is the whole number and the root. The two brackets differ only in their sign. Multiply them and the root terms cancel, leaving a whole number.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question. The bottom has two terms, so we use the formula above.

  2. 2

    — Multiply top and bottom by the same bracket with the sign swapped. Same on top and bottom, so the value stays.

  3. 3

    — Do the bottom first. It is the formula with a = 3 and b = 2: the middle terms −3√2 and +3√2 cancel.

  4. 4

    — 3² = 9 and (√2)² = 2. The bottom is now a whole number, 7.

  5. 5

    — Now the top: multiply 14 by both terms in the bracket.

  6. 6

    — Put the new top over the new bottom, ready to divide.

  7. 7

    — Divide both terms by 7: 42 ÷ 7 = 6 and 14 ÷ 7 = 2.

Common mistake

Multiplying by again. The same sign keeps a root on the bottom; swap the sign.

Key idea

Write the “multiply top and bottom by ” line and the bottom’s working in full. Each earns a method mark, so a slip at the end costs you only 1 mark, not 3.

4. Simplify and Add Surds

The 2-mark question: add or take away two surds. You can only add surds with the same root, so first pull the biggest square factor out of each root.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question. The roots are different, so we cannot add them yet.

  2. 2

    — 25 is the biggest square that goes into 75, because 25 × 3 = 75.

  3. 3

    — Split the root into two roots. √25 = 5 comes out as a whole number; √3 stays.

  4. 4

    — Same for 12: 4 is the biggest square in it, and √4 = 2.

  5. 5

    — Both are now lots of √3, so add the numbers in front, just like 5x + 2x = 7x.

Key idea

Taking away works the same way: .

Common mistake

Adding under the root: is not . You only add surds with the same root.

5. Multiply and Divide Surds

Exams ask you to multiply or divide surds, often to find a whole number k. Two rules do it.

Formula

and are the numbers outside the roots; and are inside. Outside numbers multiply together, inside numbers multiply together.

Formula

Dividing works the same way: one root divided by another is the root of divided by .

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question. Two surds multiplied, each with a number in front of its root.

  2. 2

    — Outside numbers together, roots together. Order does not matter when you multiply.

  3. 3

    — 4 × 3 = 12 and √6 × √2 = √12.

  4. 4

    — √12 is not in its simplest form: √12 = √(4 × 3) = 2√3.

  5. 5

    — 12 × 2 = 24.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question: find the whole number k.

  2. 2

    — Outside divides by outside, inside divides by inside.

  3. 3

    — 18 ÷ 3 = 6 and 20 ÷ 5 = 4.

  4. 4

    — √4 = 2 is a whole number, so k = 12.

Key idea

Powers of a surd: pair the roots up. : one pair makes 5, and the root left over stays.

6. Expand Brackets With Surds

The 2- or 3-mark question: expand brackets with surds. Multiply every term by every term, then use .

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question. Squared means the bracket times itself.

  2. 2

    — Write it out twice so no term gets lost.

  3. 3

    — Every term in the first bracket times every term in the second: four products.

  4. 4

    — Work each one out. √5 × √5 = 5, a whole number.

  5. 5

    — Collect: 9 + 5 = 14, and 3√5 + 3√5 = 6√5.

Common mistake

Squaring each part: is not . You lose the middle terms.

Exams often put a number in front of the root and a minus in a bracket, then ask for the answer in the form .

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question: write it as .

  2. 2

    — Four products: 4 × 2, 4 × 5√3, −√3 × 2 and −√3 × 5√3. Keep each sign with its term.

  3. 3

    — The hard term alone. Numbers outside multiply, roots multiply, and √3 × √3 = 3.

  4. 4

    — Put −15 back in its place.

  5. 5

    — Whole numbers: 8 − 15 = −7. Roots: 20√3 − 2√3 = 18√3.

  6. 6

    — Match the parts: the whole number is a, the number in front of √3 is b.

7. Rationalise: a Negative Bottom

Sometimes the bottom works out negative, because the root is bigger than the whole number. Keep going: a negative whole number is still fine.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question. Two terms on the bottom, so swap the sign.

  2. 2

    — Multiply top and bottom by (2 + √6), the bottom with its sign swapped, so the roots on the bottom will cancel.

  3. 3

    — The formula with a = 2 and b = 6.

  4. 4

    — 6 is bigger than 4, so the bottom is −2. It is a whole number, which is what we wanted.

  5. 5

    — 10 × 2 = 20 and 10 × √6 = 10√6.

  6. 6

    — Put the new top over the new bottom, ready to divide.

  7. 7

    — Divide each term by −2: 20 ÷ (−2) = −10 and 10√6 ÷ (−2) = −5√6. Both signs flip.

Common mistake

Flipping only the first sign. Dividing by −2 changes the sign of every term on top.

8. Rationalise: Roots on Top Too

Some questions have a root on top as well, and ask for the form . Same method; the top is just a bracket to expand.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question: write it as .

  2. 2

    — Multiply top and bottom by the bottom bracket with its sign swapped.

  3. 3

    — The formula with a = 3 and b = 2.

  4. 4

    — Four products: 4 × 3, 4 × √2, √2 × 3 and √2 × √2 = 2.

  5. 5

    — 12 + 2 = 14 and 4√2 + 3√2 = 7√2.

  6. 6

    — Divide both terms by 7: 14 ÷ 7 = 2 and 7√2 ÷ 7 = √2.

  7. 7

    — 2 + √2 matches .

Common mistake

Multiplying out only the bottom. The top is a bracket too, so it needs all four products.

9. Surds in a Shape

The 3- or 4-mark question: a rectangle or cuboid with surd lengths. Set up the division, then rationalise.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The area is 12 and the length is √5 + 1. Width = area ÷ length.

  2. 2

    — Two terms on the bottom, so multiply top and bottom by the bracket with the sign swapped.

  3. 3

    — The middle terms cancel, leaving 5 − 1 = 4.

  4. 4

    — Multiply 12 by both terms: 12 × √5 and 12 × (−1).

  5. 5

    — Divide both terms by 4: 12 ÷ 4 = 3.

Key idea

No calculator here. The exam wants the exact form, so never write a decimal. Check: , the area.

10. Which Method? Read the Question

Look at where the root is.

You seeYou do
A root with a square factorpull the square out
Surds added or taken awaysimplify each, then add like surds
Surds multiplied or dividedoutside with outside, inside with inside
One root on the bottomtimes that root, top and bottom
A bottom like times the bracket with the sign swapped
Brackets to expandmultiply every term
A shape with surd sidesdivide, then rationalise

Key idea

At the end, check: no root on the bottom, and every root as small as it can be.
