The Cosine Ratio

Cambridge IGCSE Maths 0580 · Edexcel Further Pure Maths 4PM1

1. Cosine Uses the Side Next to the Angle

Cosine compares the adjacent side, the one touching the angle, with the hypotenuse.

Formula

As the angle opens up, the adjacent side gets shorter, so cos gets smaller.

Key idea

Bigger angle, smaller cos. That is the opposite of sin and tan.

2. Find the Adjacent: Multiply

The 2-mark question: you know the hypotenuse and the angle, and want the side next to the angle. The hypotenuse is 9 cm and the angle is .

Worked example

  1. 1

    — x touches the 32° angle, so it is the adjacent. The 9 cm side is the longest, the hypotenuse. Adjacent and hypotenuse mean cos.

  2. 2

    — x is divided by 9, so multiply both sides by 9 to leave x alone.

  3. 3

    — Type 9 × cos 32 into the calculator, set to degrees.

  4. 4

    — Round to 3 significant figures and add the unit. It is shorter than the 9 cm hypotenuse, as it should be.

Common mistake

Using sin: . That is the side across from the angle, not the one touching it.

Key idea

Some questions say “show that x = 7.63 cm”. Write the unrounded line x = 7.632… first, then the rounded 7.63. The unrounded line is what proves you worked it out. Keep your calculator in degree mode.

3. Find the Hypotenuse: Divide

The 3-mark question: you know the adjacent side and want the hypotenuse. The adjacent side is 8.5 cm and the angle is .

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The 8.5 cm side touches the 41° angle, so it is the adjacent. x is the hypotenuse. Adjacent and hypotenuse mean cos.

  2. 2

    — x is on the bottom of the fraction. Multiply both sides by x to bring it up.

  3. 3

    — x is now multiplied by cos 41°. Divide both sides by cos 41° to leave x alone.

  4. 4

    — Type 8.5 ÷ cos 41 into the calculator.

  5. 5

    — Round to 3 significant figures. It is longer than 8.5 cm, as a hypotenuse must be.

Common mistake

Multiplying: . That is shorter than 8.5, but the hypotenuse must be the longest side.

4. Find the Angle: Inverse Cosine

The 3-mark question can also give two sides and ask for the angle. The adjacent side is 6.4 cm and the hypotenuse is 10 cm.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The 6.4 cm side touches the angle, so it is the adjacent. The 10 cm side is the hypotenuse. Adjacent and hypotenuse mean cos.

  2. 2

    — Divide 6.4 by 10. The answer is below 1, as a cosine must be.

  3. 3

    — We know the cosine and want the angle. Inverse cosine, , undoes cos.

  4. 4

    — Type the of 0.64 into the calculator.

  5. 5

    — Round to 1 decimal place, the usual accuracy for angles, and add the degree sign.

Common mistake

Pressing inverse sine and getting . Check which sides you have: the 6.4 cm side touches the angle, so it is cos.

5. Which Method? Read the Question

Look for the hypotenuse and the side that touches the angle.

Key idea

Cos and sin both use the hypotenuse. The other side decides: touching the angle is cos, across from it is sin.
