1. Tan Measures Steepness
Tan compares the two sides that meet at the right angle. It is how far up for each step across.
Formula
is the marked angle. The hypotenuse is not used at all.
| Angle | tan |
| 0.364 | |
| 1 | |
| 1.73 |
Key idea
At 45 degrees the opposite and adjacent are equal, so tan is 1. Steeper than that, tan is bigger than 1.
2. Find an Angle From Two Sides
The 3-mark question: you know the two sides that meet at the right angle, and want the angle. A slope rises 4.5 metres over 8 metres across.
Worked example
- 1
— The rise 4.5 is opposite the angle and the 8 across is adjacent to it. Tan is opposite over adjacent, so 4.5 goes on top.
- 2
— Divide 4.5 by 8 on the calculator to get the ratio.
- 3
— Inverse tan undoes tan, so it turns the ratio back into an angle.
- 4
— Type it in with the calculator in degrees mode and keep all the digits.
- 5
— Round to 1 d.p. The digit after the first decimal place is 5, so round up.
Common mistake
Typing . That gives a number, not an angle. Use the inverse, .
Key idea
Check your calculator is set to degrees before you start.
Key idea
Write the line first. Marks are given for that line even if a calculator slip then spoils the angle.
3. Find the Opposite: Multiply
The 2-mark question: you know the angle and the adjacent side. The adjacent side is 7 cm and the angle is .
Worked example
- 1
— The 7 cm side touches the angle, so it is the adjacent. is across from the angle, so it is the opposite and goes on top.
- 2
— is divided by 7, so multiply both sides by 7 to get alone.
- 3
— Type 7 × tan 38 into the calculator in degrees mode.
- 4
— Round to 3 s.f. The next digit is 9, so round the 6 up to 7.
Common mistake
Dividing: . Below 45 degrees the opposite must be shorter than the adjacent, so 8.96 cannot be right.
4. Find the Adjacent: Divide
When the unknown is the adjacent side, it ends up on the bottom of the fraction. The opposite side is 9 cm and the angle is .
Worked example
- 1
— The 9 cm side is opposite the angle. touches the angle, so it is the adjacent and goes on the bottom.
- 2
— Multiply both sides by to bring it off the bottom.
- 3
— is multiplied by , so divide both sides by .
- 4
— Work out 9 ÷ tan 52 on the calculator in degrees mode.
- 5
— Round to 3 s.f. The next digit is 1, so the 3 stays.
Common mistake
Working out . That treats the unknown as if it were on top.
5. Which Method? Read the Question
Find the two sides in the question. If neither is the hypotenuse, it is tan.
| You see | You do |
| Two shorter sides, find the angle | inverse tan of opposite ÷ adjacent |
| Angle and adjacent, find the opposite | multiply by tan |
| Angle and opposite, find the adjacent | divide by tan |
| The hypotenuse is given or wanted | The Sine Ratio or The Cosine Ratio |
| Height of a tower from an angle | Angles of Elevation and Depression |
Key idea
Tan is the only ratio that never uses the hypotenuse.
