Part (a) · 3 marks
Given 2 muffins and 1 carrot cake cost £4.74 and the cake costs £1.80, find the cost of each muffin.
- 14.74 − 1.80 = 2.94
- 22.94 ÷ 2 = 1.47
Answer£1.47
Part (b) · 3 marks
With £5, apples at £0.25 and oranges at £0.30, and twice as many apples as oranges, find the greatest number of apples.
- 1For every 1 orange she buys 2 apples: one set costs 2 × 0.25 + 0.30 = £0.80
- 2Number of whole sets = 5 ÷ 0.80 = 6.25, so 6 sets
- 3Apples = 6 × 2 = 12
