The question, in short

A regular hexagon has side (x − 1) cm; an isosceles triangle has GH = (2x − 3) cm and JH = JG = (x + 5) cm. Equal perimeters; find the hexagon's side length, showing algebra.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Solution · 5 marks

  1. 16(x − 1) = 6x − 6
  2. 22(x + 5) + (2x − 3) = 2x + 10 + 2x − 3 = 4x + 7
  3. 36x − 6 = 4x + 7
  4. 46x − 4x = 7 + 6
  5. 52x = 13
  6. 6x = 6.5
  7. 7(6.5 − 1) = 5.5
