The question, in short

Form an equation from tins A, B and C holding x, 4x and x − 7 buttons totalling 137, then find how many buttons are in tin C.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 4 marks

  1. 1Tin A = x, tin B = 4x, tin C = x − 7
  2. 2x + 4x + x − 7 = 137, so 6x − 7 = 137
  3. 36x = 144, so x = 24
  4. 4Tin C = 24 − 7 = 17
