The question, in short

Solve a linear inequality and factorise a quadratic, then use the factorisation to solve the related quadratic equation.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 2 marks

Solve 5x − 7 ≤ 2 for x.

  1. 15x − 7 ≤ 2
  2. 25x ≤ 2 + 7
  3. 35x ≤ 9
  4. 4x ≤ 9/5
  5. 5x ≤ 1.8

Answerx ≤ 1.8

Part (bi) · 2 marks

Factorise y² − 2y − 35.

  1. 1Find two numbers that multiply to −35 and add to −2
  2. 2These numbers are −7 and 5
  3. 3y² − 2y − 35 = (y − 7)(y + 5)

Answer(y − 7)(y + 5)

Part (bii) · 1 mark

Using your factorisation, solve y² − 2y − 35 = 0.

  1. 1(y − 7)(y + 5) = 0
  2. 2y − 7 = 0 or y + 5 = 0
  3. 3y = 7 or y = −5
  4. 47, −5

Answer7, −5
