The question, in short

Expand and simplify a product of two brackets, then fully factorise an algebraic expression involving powers of b and c.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 2 marks

Expand and simplify (y + 4)(2 − y).

  1. 1Multiply each term: 2y − y² + 8 − 4y
  2. 2Collect like terms: 8 − 2y − y²

Answer8 − 2y − y²

Part (b) · 2 marks

Factorise fully 15b⁵c − 35b³c⁹.

  1. 1Highest common factor of both terms: 5b³c
  2. 215b⁵c ÷ 5b³c = 3b² and 35b³c⁹ ÷ 5b³c = 7c⁸
  3. 35b³c(3b² − 7c⁸)

Answer5b³c(3b² − 7c⁸)
