The question, in short
Rectangle ABCD has AB = 24 cm, AD = (5x − 1) cm and BC = (3x + 7.4) cm. Find the perimeter, showing working clearly.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.
Solution · 4 marks
- 1Opposite sides of a rectangle are equal, so 5x − 1 = 3x + 7.4
- 22x = 8.4, so x = 4.2
- 3AD = 5 × 4.2 − 1 = 20 cm (and BC = 3 × 4.2 + 7.4 = 20 cm)
- 4Perimeter = 24 + 24 + 20 + 20 = 88
