The question, in short
Three-part algebra question: form and simplify a sweets total formula in x, rearrange a formula to make g the subject, and solve a linear equation showing working.

Part (a) · 3 marks
Simon has x sweets, Yuen has 2 more, Giulia has 3 times Yuen's amount; write T in terms of x in simplest form.
- 1Yuen: x + 2
- 2Giulia: 3(x + 2) = 3x + 6
- 3T = x + (x + 2) + (3x + 6)
- 4T = 5x + 8
AnswerT = 5x + 8
Part (b) · 2 marks
Rearrange r = 4g + 7 to make g the subject.
- 1r = 4g + 7
- 2r − 7 = 4g
- 3g = (r − 7)/4
Answerg = (r − 7)/4
Part (c) · 3 marks
Solve 6y − 3 = 2y + 8, showing clear algebraic working.
- 16y − 3 = 2y + 8
- 26y − 2y = 8 + 3
- 34y = 11
- 4y = 11/4 = 2.75
Answer2.75
