The question, in short

Rearrange y = √((3x − 2)/(x + 1)) to make x the subject, showing the algebraic steps needed to isolate x.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 4 marks

  1. 1y = (3x − 2) / (x + 1)
  2. 2y² = (3x − 2) / (x + 1)
  3. 3y² (x + 1) = 3x − 2
  4. 4y² x + y² = 3x − 2
  5. 5y² x − 3x = −2 − y²
  6. 6x(y² − 3) = −2 − y²
  7. 7x = (−2 − y²) / (y² − 3)
  8. 8x = (y² + 2) / (3 − y²)

Answer(y² + 2)/(3 − y²)
