The question, in short

Using right-angled triangles ABC and DAC with BC = 6 cm and AC = 7.5 cm, and quadrilateral ABCD area 31.5 cm², find the length of AD.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Solution · 6 marks

  1. 1AB² = 7.5² − 6² = 20.25, so AB = 4.5 cm
  2. 2Area of triangle ABC = ½ × 6 × 4.5 = 13.5 cm²
  3. 3Area of triangle DAC = 31.5 − 13.5 = 18 cm²
  4. 4½ × 7.5 × AD = 18, so AD = 18 × 2 ÷ 7.5 = 4.8
