The question, in short

On a grid with axes 0 to 8, draw and label three straight lines, then shade and label the region meeting three given inequalities.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Part (a) · 3 marks

Draw and label the lines y = 2, x = 6 and y = x + 1 on the grid.

  1. 1Draw a horizontal line at y = 2 across the grid
  2. 2Draw a vertical line at x = 6 up the grid
  3. 3Plot the line y = x + 1 by using points such as (0,1) and (1,2), then draw the line

Answery = 2 drawn, x = 6 drawn, y = x + 1 drawn

Part (b) · 1 mark

Shade and label R, the region satisfying y ≥ 2, x ≤ 6 and y ≤ x + 1.

  1. 1Use the three lines y = 2, x = 6 and y = x + 1 from part (a)
  2. 2y ≥ 2 is satisfied on and above the line y = 2
  3. 3x ≤ 6 is satisfied on and to the left of the line x = 6
  4. 4y ≤ x + 1 is satisfied on and below the line y = x + 1
  5. 5y = 2 meets y = x + 1 at (1, 2)
  6. 6y = 2 meets x = 6 at (6, 2)
  7. 7x = 6 meets y = x + 1 at (6, 7)
  8. 8All three inequalities hold together inside the triangle (1, 2), (6, 2), (6, 7)
  9. 9Shade that triangle and label it R

AnswerR is the triangle with vertices (1, 2), (6, 2) and (6, 7), shaded and labelled R
