The question, in short

Complete a table of values for y = 2x − 1, then plot its graph on a grid for x from −2 to 3.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Part (a) · 2 marks

Fill in the missing y values in the table for y = 2x − 1 at the given x values.

  1. 1x = −2: 2 × (−2) − 1 = −5
  2. 2x = −1: 2 × (−1) − 1 = −3
  3. 3x = 1: 2 × 1 − 1 = 1
  4. 4x = 2: 2 × 2 − 1 = 3

Answer−5, −3, 1, 3

Part (b) · 2 marks

Draw the straight-line graph of y = 2x − 1 on the grid for x between −2 and 3.

  1. 1Work out y for each x using y = 2x − 1, e.g. x = −2 gives y = 2 × (−2) − 1 = −5
  2. 2Points: (−2, −5), (−1, −3), (0, −1), (1, 1), (2, 3), (3, 5)
  3. 3Plot them and join with a ruled straight line from (−2, −5) to (3, 5)

AnswerA straight line from (−2, −5) to (3, 5) through (−1, −3), (0, −1), (1, 1) and (2, 3)
