The question, in short
Use four numbered cards (1, 2, 4, 5) to describe likelihood of picking 5, mark a probability on a scale, and complete six cards so the chance of an even number is 1/2.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.
Part (a) · 1 mark
Choose the word from impossible, unlikely, evens, likely, certain that best describes the chance of picking the card numbered 5.
- 1Only 1 of the 4 cards shows 5
- 2P(5) = 1/4, which is less than 1/2
- 3so the word is unlikely
Answerunlikely
Part (b) · 1 mark
Place a cross on the 0-to-1 probability scale at the chance of picking a card numbered less than 6.
- 1All four numbers 1, 2, 4, 5 are less than 6
- 2P(less than 6) = 4/4 = 1
- 3Put the cross at 1
AnswerA cross at 1 on the probability scale
Part (c) · 1 mark
Given cards 3, 3, 5, 6 and two blanks, write numbers on the blanks so picking an even number has probability 1/2.
- 1P(even) = 1/2, so 3 of the 6 cards are even
- 2Only 6 is even so far
- 3Both blank cards must be even, e.g. 2 and 4
Answerany two even numbers, e.g. 2, 4
