The question, in short

Khalid's box has 17 red and 28 blue counters, the rest orange. Given the probability of picking an orange counter is 4/9, work out how many orange counters are in the box.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 3 marks

  1. 1Red and blue: 17 + 28 = 45
  2. 2P(not orange) = 1 − 4/9 = 5/9
  3. 35/9 of the total is 45, so total = 45 ÷ 5 × 9 = 81
  4. 4Orange = 81 − 45 = 36
