1. What Profit and Loss Are

The cost price is what you pay. The selling price is what you sell for. The difference tells you if you gained or lost money.

WordMeaning
Cost pricewhat you paid
Selling pricewhat you sold for
Profitsold for more than you paid
Losssold for less than you paid

Rule

Profit is money in minus money out. Buy for $80 and sell for $100: profit.

2. Percentage Profit

The 5-mark question: work out the percentage profit. First find the total cost and the total money in. Then use

Formula

The profit is money in minus money out. The cost price is the total you paid.

You buy 24 mugs for $150. You sell of them at $9 each and the rest at $6 each.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — How many sell at $9: two thirds of 24. Divide 24 by 3 to get 8, then times 2.

  2. 2

    — The rest sell at $6. Take the 16 away from all 24 mugs.

  3. 3

    — Money in from the $9 mugs: how many sold × the price of one.

  4. 4

    — Money in from the $6 mugs, the same way.

  5. 5

    — Add the two groups to get the total money in.

  6. 6

    — Money in minus what you paid. 192 is more than 150, so this is a profit of $42.

  7. 7

    — Divide the profit by the cost, then × 100 to turn the answer into a percentage.

Common mistake

Dividing by the money in: 42 ÷ 192 gives about 21.9%, which is wrong. Always divide by what you paid.

Key idea

Prices in two currencies? Change everything into one currency before you subtract.

3. Percentage Loss

The 5-mark question: some items sell cheap, so the money in is less than the cost. Find the percentage loss.

You buy 40 pens at $2 each. You sell half at $2.50, a quarter at $1.60 and the rest at $1.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The cost: you paid $2 for each of the 40 pens.

  2. 2

    — Half the pens sell at $2.50. Half of 40 is 20.

  3. 3

    — A quarter sell at $1.60. Divide 40 by 4.

  4. 4

    — The rest sell at $1. Take both groups away from the 40 pens.

  5. 5

    — Money in from the first group: how many × the price.

  6. 6

    — Money in from the second group.

  7. 7

    — Money in from the rest.

  8. 8

    — Total money in. It is less than the $80 cost, so this is a loss.

  9. 9

    — Cost minus money in, the bigger minus the smaller, so the loss is a positive $4.

  10. 10

    — Divide the loss by the cost, then × 100. Just like profit, you compare with what you paid.

Common mistake

Forgetting the rest. Work out how many are left over: 40 minus 20 minus 10 is 10 pens.

4. A Quicker Way: Selling ÷ Cost

Mark schemes also accept a one-division method. It is quick on a calculator, and it tells you by itself if it is a loss.

Formula

The selling price is the money in. The cost price is what you paid. The answer is the percentage profit; if it comes out negative, it is a loss.

Profit: buy a bike for $270, sell it for $310.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Divide the money in by the cost. Keep the full calculator number; do not round yet.

  2. 2

    — × 100 turns it into a percentage: you sold for 114.8…% of what you paid.

  3. 3

    — Take away 100%, which is the cost itself. What is left is the profit.

  4. 4

    — Round only at the end: 14.8148… is 14.8 to 3 significant figures.

Loss: buy a phone for $250, sell it for $215.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The phone sold for 86% of what it cost.

  2. 2

    — Take away 100. The answer is negative because the money in is less than the cost.

  3. 3

    — A negative answer means a loss. Write it as a 14% loss, not a −14% profit.

Common mistake

Stopping at 114.8%. That is the selling price as a percentage of the cost. Take away 100 to get the profit.

Key idea

Write the division down before you press equals. In a 2-mark question, a line like 310 ÷ 270 × 100 earns 1 mark even if your final answer slips.

5. Did It Make Enough Profit?

Some questions give the percentage profit and ask for the price, or ask if a sale made enough profit. Turn the percentage into a multiplier of the cost.

Formula

is the percentage profit. For a loss of %, use instead: a 15% loss means × 0.85.

Lina buys a lamp for $160. She wants at least 30% profit. She sells it for $200. Does she make 30% profit?

Worked example

  1. 1

    — She wants her cost back (100%) plus 30% more on top.

  2. 2

    — Change the percentage into a multiplier: divide by 100.

  3. 3

    — The cost × the multiplier: $208 is the lowest price that gives 30% profit.

  4. 4

    — She sold for $200, which is less than $208.

  5. 5

    — So she did not make 30% profit. Always write Yes or No together with the numbers that prove it.

Key idea

Another way gets the same marks: her profit is 200 − 160 = 40, and 40 ÷ 160 × 100 = 25%, which is less than 30%.

Common mistake

Working out 30% of $200. The percentage is always of the cost, $160, not of the selling price.

6. Total Profit in Money

The 4-mark question: find the total profit. Only the items that sell bring money in, but you paid for all of them.

You buy 150 boxes at $12 each. You sell of them at $25 each. The rest do not sell.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The cost. You pay for all 150 boxes, even the ones that never sell.

  2. 2

    — Boxes sold: 150 ÷ 5 = 30, and 3 × 30 = 90.

  3. 3

    — Money in. Only the 90 boxes that sold bring money in.

  4. 4

    — Money in minus the cost. 2250 is bigger, so it is a profit of $450.

Common mistake

Selling all 150: . The unsold boxes bring in nothing.

7. Profit as a Share of the Price

Some questions say “25% of the price is profit”. That is a share of the selling price, not the percentage profit. Find the profit on one item, then multiply by how many sold.

A café sells 300 drinks, tea : coffee = 2 : 1. Tea costs $1.20 and coffee $2.50. 25% of the tea price is profit, and 40% of the coffee price is profit. Find the total profit.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Add the ratio parts: 3 parts in total.

  2. 2

    — One part is 100 drinks.

  3. 3

    — Tea has 2 parts, so 200 teas.

  4. 4

    — Coffee has 1 part, so 100 coffees.

  5. 5

    — Profit on one tea: 25% of its price, and 25% = 0.25.

  6. 6

    — Profit on one coffee: 40% of its price, and 40% = 0.40.

  7. 7

    — Profit from all the teas: how many × the profit on one.

  8. 8

    — Profit from all the coffees, the same way.

  9. 9

    — Add the two groups for the total profit.

Common mistake

Multiplying all 300 drinks by one price. Split the 300 by the ratio first: 200 teas and 100 coffees.

Key idea

Read the words. “Percentage profit” compares the profit with the cost. “25% of the price is profit” takes 25% of the selling price.

8. Which Method? Read the Question

Look at what the question asks you to find.
