1. Angle Involved? Trig. Only Sides? Pythagoras.

Longer questions need both tools, one after the other. For each right-angled triangle, look at what it involves.

The triangle involvesUse
three sides, no anglePythagoras
two sides and an anglesin, cos or tan

Key idea

The answer from one triangle is often the known side for the next. Keep it on your calculator, unrounded.

2. Symmetric Trapeziums: Cut Off the Corners

The 5 or 6-mark question: a trapezium with one line of symmetry. Drop a height from each top corner. That makes a right-angled triangle at each end.

The slanted sides are 10 cm, the bottom is 30 cm and the bottom angles are . Find the area.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — This cuts off a right-angled triangle at each end. Its hypotenuse is the 10 cm slanted side.

  2. 2

    — The height is opposite the 55° angle and 10 is the hypotenuse, so use sin.

  3. 3

    — Work it out and keep the full value on your calculator for the area.

  4. 4

    — Each end piece is next to the 55° angle, with 10 as the hypotenuse, so use cos.

  5. 5

    — Work it out. This is one end piece only.

  6. 6

    — There is an end piece at both ends of the trapezium, so double it.

  7. 7

    — The top side is what is left of the 30 cm bottom after both end pieces are taken off.

  8. 8

    — Area of a trapezium: half the sum of the two parallel sides, times the height.

  9. 9

    — Round to 3 significant figures and give the unit.

Common mistake

Using the slanted 10 cm as the height. The height is straight up, so it is shorter: 8.19 cm.

3. Circles: The Hidden Right Angle

The 4 or 5-mark question puts a triangle inside a circle. If one side is a diameter, the angle opposite it is . Quote the reason: the angle in a semicircle is .

is a diameter and is on the semicircle. cm and angle . Find the perimeter of the semicircle.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — AB is a diameter, so the angle at C on the curve is a right angle. The reason is: angle in a semicircle.

  2. 2

    — AC = 14 is next to the 40° angle and AB is the hypotenuse, so use cos.

  3. 3

    — AB is the unknown on the bottom, so divide. This is the diameter.

  4. 4

    — The curved edge is half a circumference, which is half of π times the diameter.

  5. 5

    — The perimeter of a semicircle is the curved arc plus the straight diameter. Round to 3 significant figures.

Common mistake

Leaving out the straight edge. A semicircle's perimeter is the curved arc and the diameter.

Key idea

If two sides of the triangle are given instead, use Pythagoras for the diameter.

A line from the centre to the middle of a chord is also at a right angle. The chord cm, is its midpoint, is the centre and angle . Find the area of the circle.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — A line from the centre to the midpoint of a chord meets it at a right angle. That gives a right-angled triangle .

  2. 2

    — is the midpoint, so is half of the chord.

  3. 3

    — is opposite the 38° angle and is a radius, the hypotenuse, so use sin.

  4. 4

    — The radius is the unknown on the bottom, so divide. Keep the full value.

  5. 5

    — Area of a circle uses the radius, not the diameter.

  6. 6

    — Round to 3 significant figures and give the unit.

Key idea

In every circle question, look for a right angle first: a diameter, or a line from the centre to the middle of a chord.

4. Shapes Built From Right-Angled Triangles

The 4-mark question asks for a perimeter. Find every missing edge, one triangle at a time.

Triangle is isosceles with . is the middle of , cm is at right angles to and angle . Find the perimeter.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — In the right-angled triangle , 9 is opposite the 58° angle and is next to it, so use tan.

  2. 2

    — is the unknown on the bottom, so divide.

  3. 3

    — Now two sides of the same triangle are known and no angle is needed, so use Pythagoras for the slanted side .

  4. 4

    — Add the squares, then take the square root.

  5. 5

    — is the middle of , so the base is twice .

  6. 6

    — The triangle is isosceles, so and are equal. Add the two slanted sides and the base.

  7. 7

    — Round to 3 significant figures and give the unit.

Common mistake

Adding only once and getting 26.8 cm. is the middle, so the base is twice .

5. Two Triangles Sharing a Side

Some questions join two right-angled triangles along one side. Find that shared side first. It is the link between them. has a right angle at and is on . cm, angle and angle . Find .

Worked example

  1. 1

    — In triangle , is next to the 35° angle and is the hypotenuse, so use cos. is the side both triangles share.

  2. 2

    — Work it out and keep the full value.

  3. 3

    — In the big triangle the two angles at sit side by side, so add them.

  4. 4

    — is opposite the 55° angle and is next to it, so use tan. is the unknown on top, so multiply.

  5. 5

    — Back in triangle , is opposite the 35° angle and 12 is the hypotenuse, so use sin.

  6. 6

    — lies between and , so is the whole of take away the part .

Common mistake

Using 20° in the big triangle. The angle of at is the two angles together, 55°. With 20° you get cm, which is shorter than cm. That is impossible, because is on .

Key idea

Show every triangle's working. Each correct line earns marks for working, so one slip later does not lose the whole question.

6. Which Method? Read the Question
