0580/42 Oct/Nov 2022, Question 5: Speed-Time Graphs and Acceleration

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 · Paper 42 (Extended) · Calculator · 8 marks

اقرأ هذا الحل مشروحاً بالعربي ←

The question, in short

Use a speed–time graph for a car and a bus to find the car's acceleration, the bus's constant speed v given a 134 m difference over 40 s, and a train's average speed in km/h for 16 240 m in 10 min 30 s.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Part (ai) · 1 mark

Calculate the acceleration of the car over the first 18 seconds from the graph.

  1. 1Acceleration = (24 − 10) ÷ 18 = 14/18 m/s²

Answer7/9

Part (aii) · 4 marks

Given the car travels 134 m more than the bus in 40 seconds, calculate the bus's constant speed v.

  1. 1Car distance = 1/2 × (10 + 24) × 18 + 22 × 24 = 306 + 528 = 834 m
  2. 2Bus distance = 834 − 134 = 700 m
  3. 340v = 700
  4. 4v = 17.5 m/s

Answer17.5

Part (b) · 3 marks

Calculate the train's average speed in kilometres per hour for 16 240 m in 10 minutes 30 seconds.

  1. 1Time = 10 min 30 s = 10.5 min = 0.175 h
  2. 2Distance = 16 240 m = 16.24 km
  3. 3Speed = 16.24 ÷ 0.175 = 92.8 km/h

Answer92.8 or 92 4/5
