The question, in short

Rearrange y = √((x + 1)/(x − 4)) to make x the subject, showing the algebraic steps.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 4 marks

  1. 1y = sqrt((x + 1)/(x − 4))
  2. 2y² = (x + 1)/(x − 4)
  3. 3y²(x − 4) = x + 1
  4. 4y² x − 4y² = x + 1
  5. 5y² x − x = 4y² + 1
  6. 6x(y² − 1) = 4y² + 1
  7. 7x = (4y² + 1)/(y² − 1)

Answerx = (4y² + 1)/(y² − 1)
