The question, in short

Rearrange y = (n² + d)/n² to make n the subject, given n > 0.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 4 marks

  1. 1y = (n² + d) / n²
  2. 2Split the fraction: y = n²/n² + d/n²
  3. 3y = 1 + d/n²
  4. 4y − 1 = d/n²
  5. 5Multiply both sides by n²: n²(y − 1) = d
  6. 6n² = d / (y − 1)
  7. 7n > 0, so n = √(d / (y − 1))

Answern = √(d / (y − 1))
